CLASSIC MOONGUSA sits quietly in Jeju’s old town, surrounded by the slow charm of the island’s historic streets. More than a stationery shop, it is a reflection of its founder’s lifelong relationship with paper, notebooks, and objects that grow more meaningful with age.
“Moongusa means stationery store in Korean,” the founder explains. “I have loved stationery since childhood. I collect vintage items and things that can be used for a long time.”
After moving to Jeju, the founder noticed a lack of places to browse quality stationery and paper goods. Inspired by the character of the old neighbourhood, Classic Moongusa opened its doors in 2021.
One story shared by the founder perfectly captures the magic of stationery culture. Years ago, a friend carried what appeared to be a passport wallet. Later, someone used a similar object as a wallet. Then another person pulled one out on a plane as a notebook.
“I kept seeing the same object in different places,” the founder recalls. “The beautiful leather and the many ways people used it caught my attention.”
That object was the TRAVELER’S Notebook, which eventually became one of the shop’s signature collections.
“When I look at the TRAVELER’S Notebook, it reminds me of the binder diaries I used when I was young,” the founder says. “You could change the pages, add stickers, keep photos, and fill them with things you loved.”
Today, CLASSIC MOONGUSA carries a carefully curated range of TRAVELER’S Notebook products alongside beloved Japanese stationery brands such as Penco and Midori. Visitors can also find Jeju-exclusive stationery and souvenirs that make thoughtful gifts to bring home.
Perhaps the founder’s favourite observation is also the most charming.
“Now, when I see someone carrying a notebook, I believe they are probably a good person,” they say. “And the older the notebook, the more interesting the person may be.”
It is a sentiment that feels perfectly at home inside CLASSIC MOONGUSA, where every notebook, pen, and paper treasure seems to carry a story waiting to be told.
