Marcsmellow: When Growth Driven Not by Scale, but By Mellowness

Marcsmellow Cover

Marcsmellow, just like the name, is a mellow world of paper goods. Cottagecore phrase sticker sheets. Memories phrase and lettering stickers in muted tones. Light-academia film strip ephemera. Soft and sweet aesthetics. Its growth strategy embodies a similar kind of energy—underpinned by subtlety and sentiment, rather than by virality or hyper-practicality.

Niche Aesthetic Brand, High-Intent Audience

The creator behind the indie stationery brand is Marcela, a Sydney-based artist and illustrator. The business began from Marcela’s love for journaling, memory keeping and soft vintage aesthetic.

The artist set up her Etsy shop — her main storefront — 9 years ago. Since then, Marcsmellow’s growth has been consistent, with about 1,900 total sales and 5.0 rating. The shop also garnered nearly 6,000 followers on TikTok and over 10,000 followers on Instagram.

Marcsmellow Founder

Despite the relatively modest follower count compared to other mass-market productivity brands, Marcsmellow saw an impressive level of social media engagement with over 9 million total likes on TikTok. The brand attracts a small-scale yet high-purchase-intent audience who simply enjoy the therapeutic effect of journaling.

“As a big believer of capturing moments on paper, most of the products are designed to help you preserve memories in your journals,” Marcela said. “I hope more people will enjoy collage journaling, because it’s been something that is therapeutic to me.”

Intentional Slowness In A Fast-Paced World

In a time when audience is overwhelmed by attention-grabbing hooks and reel footage changing every second, intentional slowness has become the new currency. People find themselves drawn towards depth, meaning and connection, rather than utility and mass commercial appeal.

Given that context, how Marcsmellow positions itself feels authentic. The brand took a community-based approach, consistently showing up at Sydney markets and events. This builds organic connections with the local community, including artists, journaling lovers and creators.

The brand also builds trust by sharing its process, from behind-the-scenes work to journaling inspiration. Through this lens, the tools become an experience to be recreated. Marcsmellow’s journaling kit and bundles market the products as a layered ecosystem, rather than standalone pieces.

Handmade inserts and mystery journaling kits

Marcsmellow’s primary products include:

  • Handmade, imperfect-by-design journal inserts: Hand-stitched inserts using mixed materials give a tactile, personal feel. Made with mixed materials like kraft paper, vellum, and textured sheets. Perfect for traveler’s notebooks and often highlighted in reviews for their tactile quality.
  • Washi tapes & washi samplers: Script, music notes, and vintage-inspired designs are Marcsmellow’s bestsellers. They blend seamlessly into journal spreads, often in muted, earthy tones.
  • Curated journaling kits (mystery packs): Themed-mystery packs (e.g. floral, celestial, music) combine stickers, PET tapes, and ephemera into a cohesive set.
  • Ephemera & film strip elements: Film strips and vintage-style cutouts used for layering and collage journaling.
  • Phrase & lettering sticker sheets: Soft, neutral-toned words and affirmations designed for journaling and memory-keeping spreads. They are often come in white, kraft, or caramel palettes.
